Pieter Brueghel the Elder (c. 1525-c. 1569) (after) - Lot 5
Pieter Brueghel the Elder (c. 1525-c. 1569) (after) Desidia (Sloth). (Pl. of the Seven Deadly Sins). 1558. Engraved by P.van der Heyden. 295x226mm. New Hollstein 22; Van Bastelaer 126. Fine proof on thin watermarked laid paper (Gothic P?), oxidized. Minor thinning and foxing in the corners. A fine short press crease on the back of the figures in the boat at the bottom. A fine 40mm oblique tear in the upper left corner, skilfully restored. A worm hole in the left tail of the perched bird. Tiny tears at the edges of the folio. Margins from 2 to 4mm. The original drawing, dated 1557, is kept at the Albertina in Vienna. "Bruegel depicts the traditional seven deadly sins, following the series already well established in the Middle Ages [...] Along with the Seven Virtues, this series is the pinnacle of Bruegel's engraved work. Each of these prints sold in large editions. Each sin is represented by a female figure endowed with attributes, including the animal traditionally associated with each sin [...] They are surrounded by a host of imaginary creatures, half-human, half-animal, in the style of Hieronymus Bosch."
