Baron Gerard's painting, exhibited at the 1824 Salon, is now in a private collection. Born in Pondicherry in the French Indies, Jacques Alexandre Bernard Law, Marquis de Lauriston, was a French soldier and politician, Marshal and Grand Veneur of France. He was a close relative of the famous Scottish economist John Law. French ambassador to St. Petersburg, he took an active part in the Russian Campaign. He was elevated to the rank of maréchal d'Empire under the Restoration. We would like to thank Mr. Alain Latreille for sharing his opinion with us: "All these ricordi were produced in the painter's studio under his supervision and sometimes retouched, and are comparable with the set kept at the Château de Versailles, purchased by King Louis-Philippe's civil list at the sale after the painter's death in 1837".
