[Françoise d'Aubigné, marquise de MAINTENON]. 52 L.A.S. addressed to Mme de Maintenon, 1710-1714; about 150 pages in-4, red hardback. Nice set of letters from ladies, nuns, convent superiors and prioresses, priests, mostly concerning charitable works, alms, payments against thanksgiving, etc. One discovers there also considerations relating to the duchess of Burgundy, Noailles, Mrs de Caylus and other great characters, the health of the King, and some political allusions; but mainly religious discussions. One often appeals to the generosity or the influence of Mme de Maintenon: supplications, requests for appointments, choice of an abbess, refusal of resignations, requests for funds, etc., but also congratulations for a victory, etc. One notes letters of the prioress of the Carmelites of the Faubourg Saint-Germain, the sister of La Maisonfort, Élisabeth de Beauvau, the abbess of Monchevreul, the nuns of the Congregation Notre-Dame de Vézelise, the superior of the Ursuline of Évreux, the prioress of the Carmelites of Pontoise, Anne-Marie de Rohan abbess of Jouarre, the sister of Mailly prioress of Poissy, etc. Former collection Marcel Plantevignes (sale Versailles, March 8, 1977, n° 95).
