BLOY (Léon). - Lot 103
BLOY (Léon). Je m'accuse..... Paris : La maison d'art, 1900. - Large in-16, 205 x 169 : 177 pp, (3 ff. last blank), printed cover. Blond calf, spine with decorated nerves, interior cold roulette, gilt head, untrimmed, cover preserved, case (binding of the XXth century). First edition dedicated to Octave Mirbeau, of this work directed against Émile Zola. It is illustrated with vignettes and culs-de-lampe by the author. The text begins in these terms: "I accuse myself very humbly and very painfully of having, in 1889, on January 21, published in Gil Blas, a silly article in which I prostituted the name of "Antaeus" to Émile Zola, assuming a greatness - material only, it is true - to this runt" (p. 11). ONE OF TWENTY COPIES ON HOLLAND PAPER, the only one on large paper after ten copies on japon. This one is enriched with an autograph letter signed by the author on the false title: à mon cher ami André // à un des Rares qui ne m'accuse pas // Léon BloyThe friendly tone of this letter could make us think that it is addressed to the young friend of the author, the journalist André Dupont (1884-1916 ). If this were the case, the dedication would be later than the edition, made between 1904, date on which the two men met, and 1916, year of the death of Dupont who was then only 32 years old. A well preserved copy in a later unsigned binding. Provenance: André Dupont, with a letter from the author.
