Armand Seguin (1869-1903) - Lot 261
Armand Seguin (1869-1903) Bretonnes. 1894. Woodcut. 185 x 225. Field, Strauss and Wagstaff 70. Very fine proof printed in wine-red on thin ivory vellum. Mounting miter return at right edge verso. Full margins. Stamp R. T. Plate published in L'Ymagier, no. 2, January 1895. This print was included in the exhibition Masterpieces from European Artist Colonies, Atlanta, 2005. "There are two states of this work, which it has been suggested may have been printed on linoleum. In the first state, a poem by Charles Morice, dated November 21, 1894 and addressed "A Paul Gauguin", appears above the image. This disappears in the second state, where we note the presence of lines behind the tree trunk, a slit in the foliage in the upper right and a monogram in the lower right, drawn in white sizes. This monogram was read "EB" by H. Bock and J.H. Müller at the 1967 Bremen exhibition, who attributed the work to Émile Bernard. It seems quite absurd that Émile Bernard, then in Cairo and estranged from Gauguin since 1891, should have lent himself to an apology for his rival. On the other hand, this disturbing monogram has been found on two works by Armand Séguin, Deux cormorans volant au-dessus des flots (Field 8) and Les Pins sur la rivière (Field 12); Caroline Boyle-Turner believes it may be an "ES", "Ergasterium Seguin", i.e., in the Nabi style, "atelier Séguin". The heavy forms, with heads tucked into shoulders, are extremely close to Séguin's etching sketches of Bretonnes aux champs from 1893-1894 (Field 44-64). Finally, issue no. 2 of L'Ymagier, in which the second state of this etching appeared in January 1895, includes the following caption: "A. Seguin Bretonnes, bois original". [...] The Bretonnes of 1894 are not "plastered" on Morice's verses but, in a graphic correspondence, symbolize the theme of departure without return to the unknown islands of Oceania, the promised land of innocence and happiness rediscovered." (M. Grivel, ed., Gauguin et l'École de Pont-Aven, exhibition catalog, Paris, Bibliothèque nationale, 1989, p. 96).
