Élisabeth-Théodore Le Tonnelier, Abbé de BRETEUIL (1712–1781 - Lot 441
Élisabeth-Théodore Le Tonnelier, Abbé de BRETEUIL (1712–1781). Letter (partially in the author’s own hand), Paris, January 6, 1764, to M. de Villepion, King’s Attorney in the bailiwick of Orléans; 4 pages, in-4 format (one and a half of which are in the author’s own hand). Regarding the city of Orléans (the Abbé de Breteuil was chancellor to the Duke of Orléans). He demonstrates that the Council’s decree of October 5, 1759—“by which the King ceded to the Duke of Orléans 4s. per livre on the market duties of the districts of Orléans and Pithiviers as compensation for the tax on goods entering the city of Orléans on behalf of the market vendors, & the collection of which, in substance and form, was highly detrimental to trade in the city of Orléans,” does not need to be confirmed by letters patent, as the Presiding Judge believes, and may continue to be enforced… He adds, in his own hand, a long postscript, to clarify: “It is not possible, without the greatest inconvenience, for matters not to remain as they were; moreover, I have been told that it was claimed that the city of Orléans had not wished to see the tax abolished”; and he reaffirms the rights of the Duke of Orléans…
