Jean-Baptiste BONTEMPS (1584–1659), first surgeon and later first valet to Louis XIII. Letter from the sender (L.A.S.), Paris, December 11, 1634, to Marshal de Brézé, with the armies in Germany; 2 folio pages, addressed with a small wax seal bearing the coat of arms (minor tears at the upper corners with no loss of text, and slight water damage). He recounts the execution in Angers of Bouilly, a servant of the Count of Montsoreau, “for the crime of counterfeiting.” It reports on the “necessary repairs to be made to the Bastille of Saumur,” the seizure of “the castellany of Milly” by the upholsterer Pietre, etc. Attached is a letter from the Marquis de Fourille to the marshal, [late January 1635] (1 p., in-4): “The news of the loss of Philisbourg has caused great displeasure; the King learned of it yesterday, and this morning he left for Saint-Germain; His Eminence the Cardinal has also gone to Ruel”…
