Marie-Thérèse-Charlotte of France, Duchess of Angoulême (177 - Lot 417
Marie-Thérèse-Charlotte of France, Duchess of Angoulême (1778–1851), Madame Royale, daughter of Louis XVI; after her release from the Temple, she married her cousin, the Duke of Angoulême. L.A., Fr[ohsdorf], September 3, 1848, to Baron Théodore Charlet at the Château de Bruyères-le-Châtel near Arpajon; 2 pages in-8, addressed with postmarks. To her former private secretary. She received his letter: “I have no further reply to give to this doctor. I am not intimidated by threats. When I took pity on him, I gave him 10,000 francs. he threw it in his maid’s face. I will not give him the 5,000 francs he is asking for, nor even a life annuity. The way he is going about it is not the way to earn it. As for the manuscript, I thought he had given it to you […] If he had good intentions and were truly unhappy, I would still give him a little help, but the way he’s going about it, he doesn’t deserve any”… She did indeed receive the 14 crates: “There were so many difficulties with customs; the paintings are in fairly good condition, but many items are broken—I don’t really care, as I attach no value to any of it; I only regret the trouble it caused you”… Charlet is needlessly tormenting himself: “Despite everything I’ve told you, you still believe you’re out of my favor […] I haven’t changed—nor will I ever change—my feelings toward you.”
