Pablo CASALS (1876–1973). 5 letters, 1912–1939, to Jacques T - Lot 266
Pablo CASALS (1876–1973). 5 letters, 1912–1939, to Jacques Thibaud; 1 page, in-12 format, with address on the back (postcard); 2 pages, in-8 format; and 4½ pages, in-4 format, on letterhead of the Orquestra Pau Casals Barcelona; 2 envelopes. A lovely exchange of letters between the cellist and his friend, the violinist. Vendrell, July 12, 1912: “Hello, old friend”; he is on vacation and wishes Thibaud the same rest. “Vert [concert organizer] wrote to me to say that they had decided that we should play solos at the two concerts in London. I refused. Do the same, because it would be a blunder if we accepted. I’m writing to Bauer [the pianist Harod Bauer] to the same effect”… Barcelona, June 8, 1934: “It is an honor for the Patronage of my concerts to have your name on the list of our honorary members—it’s very short but elegant, as you’ll see: Eugène Ysaye, President / Jacquot [Thibaud] / Fred [Cortot] / Tovey.” October 4, 1935. He is sorry he cannot embrace his “dear Jacquot,” whose ship is delayed, but he cannot stay in Barcelona and must go to Tarragona. “I hope you’re in good health and that you’re returning from this long tour feeling very satisfied, and I’m sure you’re playing better than ever”… Barcelona, June 27, 1936. The expansion work on his house in San Salvador is proceeding very slowly, and “it’s impossible to speed it up enough to carry out the plan to film in the new rooms”; as for contracts, he cannot make a decision without Thibaud and will wait for his return. Prades, January 24, 1939: He saw in a newspaper clipping “that you celebrated the 40th anniversary of your debut in Paris. Amid my anguish and heartbreak, this clipping makes me think of our friendship, our youth, and everything that binds us together”…
