Anne-Robert-Jacques TURGOT (1727–1781). Handwritten letter, - Lot 154
Anne-Robert-Jacques TURGOT (1727–1781). Handwritten letter, Limoges, February 9, 1770, to his former secretary Antoine-Bernard Caillard, “c/o Mr. Turgot, Intendant of Limoges,” in Paris; 1 page, in-4 format, addressed, fragment of a red wax seal. He will not be able to send him what he had promised [letter to Voltaire]. “Arrangements for the poor are keeping me fully occupied.” He has received no reply from the Count de Boisgelin regarding the advance in gratuities for Caillard; he has “a relative whom he wishes to entrust with business matters during his absences in order to introduce him to the field of diplomacy.” That is why Caillard will not be appointed as an embassy secretary recognized by the Court, “but I do not believe this should cause you any distress, since he is not a man who is following the same path as you.” He learned from Abbé Morellet “of your brother’s deplorable condition and the situation in which his unfortunate wife will find herself. I deeply sympathize with the grief this causes you”… Enclosed is a letter addressed to Caillard, Limoges, September 22 [1769?]: there is no need to have his cabriolet sent to him; he is about to leave for Angoulême; he found Abbé Delille’s *Georgiques* at Barbou’s bookstore, but he still needs the map of La Rochelle… (1 p., in-4, address).
