He expresses his thanks for the note: “It will take me some time to determine whether I can seriously attend to this matter. I will not write to thank you so as not to disturb you in the midst of your business affairs. We would very much like to accept your proposal together with your son. We will be alone for dinner today, and tomorrow with very few people; on Friday, as you know, it is a private gathering, but one of which you, sir, have long been a member”… June 29, 1788. He lives in seclusion in the countryside and has “no connection whatsoever with those at the head of the government”...
