Sébastien Roch Nicolas CHAMFORT (1740–1794), writer and mora - Lot 13
Sébastien Roch Nicolas CHAMFORT (1740–1794), writer and moralist. Autograph manuscript with a letter sent by Jean-Baptiste SAY; 1 page in-16 and 1 page in-4. Anecdote about Chamfort: “There is a letter from Anne of Austria to Cardinal Mazarin in which she assumes the name of one of her ladies-in-waiting and writes to him a thousand things that are almost tender. She adds, ‘I would tell you much more, if the Queen, who is standing behind me, did not cause me anxiety by reading everything I write.’” Jean-Baptiste Say notes: “Here is an anecdote I have taken from Chamfort’s papers, which I did not have printed because it is hardly worth the trouble.” He attests to the authenticity of the autograph he transcribes.
