Stoneware head of a deity, Central or Eastern India, circa 8 - Lot 248
Stoneware head of a deity, Central or Eastern India, circa 8th–11th century A carved fragment depicting a female head with a serene expression, almond-shaped eyes surmounted by long, arched eyebrows, and an aquiline nose. Curls adorn the upper part of the forehead, which features a third eye in the center. The hair is combed and adorned with a jewel set atop the head, before falling back toward the nape of the neck into a large bun. The gentle rendering of the features and the balance of the forms are in keeping with the post-Gupta tradition of Indian sculpture. Classical medieval style. Height: 9.5 cm Base.
