CHEVALIER, Michel (1806-1879). When the French government sent Chevalier to America in 1833, he was a leading economist analyzing recently built communication routes. His stay lasted almost two years, during which time he recorded his first observations on transportation in the United States, published here. His "History and Description of Communication Routes in the United States..." contains descriptions of various railroads, canals and major bridges along the East Coast, as well as in the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence regions of Canada.
Maps and plans show the canals and railroads of New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Maryland, as well as engineering plans detailing the car structures of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, the Schuylkill Canal, the Cornwall Canal, the Patapsco Viaduct, the bridge-aqueduct over the Potomac at Georgetown, the Morris Canal and other structures.
