Joseph HOËNÉ-WRONSKI (1776-1853) Polish-born mathematician, - Lot 521
Joseph HOËNÉ-WRONSKI (1776-1853) Polish-born mathematician, engineer, philosopher and mystic. Manuscript with autograph corrections, Aux Nations Slaves, Paris, August 15, 1847; 72 fol. pages (small split on 1st f.).
Important manuscript summarizing the doctrine of Messianism, seen as the final union of philosophy and religion. Presented in the form of an address to the Slavic nations, it opens with a dedication to France, "as a mark of gratitude for the long hospitality the author has received in this noble country". After a lengthy philosophical development, the author raises 21 messianic problems whose resolution requires a reform of human knowledge, starting with mathematics and continuing with philosophy. He mentions scientists such as Newton, Huygens, Clairaut, Le Verrier, etc.., who have contributed to the creation of a "rational and positive science", then evokes the Slavic nations, which he believes will embrace Messianism: "When [...] this didactic and positive determination comes to the knowledge of the Emperor of Russia, of this providential Protector of the Slavic nations, His Majesty will keenly feel this heavenly vocation and will even infallibly recognize this holy and glorious national destiny"...
This text was published under the title Adresse aux nations slaves sur les destinées du monde (Paris, Impr. de Firmin Didot Frères, 1847), and in Messianisme, ou Réforme absolue du savoir humain (id., 1847-1848, t.I, pp. 1-54).
