Working manuscript, with erasures and corrections, of this poem, here untitled, published under the title "Trop petit, trop grand" in Les Cahiers nouveaux de France et de Belgique of February-March 1939, and collected in L'Homme de cristal (1967, p.102). It has 42 lines. "Shake the van Ouvrez les vannes Here come the portulans Here come the Franc and the Sultane Emoi des maux I'm afraid of words I'm afraid of reflections in mirrors I am afraid of love that wearies me"... In the margin, Max Jacob has inscribed the name "abbé Morel". Verso, small pen-and-ink drawing of an angel's head.
