Henri GHÉON. 2 autograph manuscripts signed "H.G.", 1930; 2pages small in-4 and 1page in-8. Unpublished draft preface for the reissue in volume by Flammarion of La Vieille Dame des rues, which had appeared in serial form in 1899 in the magazine L'Ermitage, dated "April 8, 1930". Ghéon gives a brief history of L'Ermitage, directed by Édouard Ducoté, whose editors included Viélé-Griffin, Gide, Jammes, Paul Fort, Ghéon, Verhaeren, Boylesve, Rebell, Charles Guérin, Stuart Merrill and Signoret. In fact, long afterwards, Ghéon realized that his feuilleton was nothing less than a film script. And in 1899, he had no idea that he would adopt the same technique in Les Jeux de l'Enfer et du Ciel (1929)... - New, shorter preface, entitled Un seul mot, and dated "1899-1930": "This book, which runs like a film, may seem implausible. However, the reader must be warned that the most gratuitous, inadmissible and absurd things he will find in it have been precisely modelled on reality. Art is logical, but life is not. Fantasy lies between the two. But don't look for philosophy, symbolism or morality in action in Ms. Bourre's story. Pure play." Enclosed: - a portrait of Ghéon by Jean Texcier, original drawing, signed and dated 1925, in Cine ink (26x20cm) for Les Nouvelles Littéraires; - program for La Complainte de Pranzini et de Thérèse de Lisieux (Théâtre des Mathurins, 1934), with a. s. mailing to Émile Drain.s. to Émile Drain; - program for Violante by the Compagnie des Quinze (1932); - 7programs for shows by the Compagnons de Notre-Dame "groupés par Henri Ghéon" (1925-1929); - 2 press clippings.
