Georges COURTELINE (1858-1929). 2 L.A.S., 1918-1929, to Émil - Lot 134
Georges COURTELINE (1858-1929). 2 L.A.S., 1918-1929, to Émile Fabre, administrator of the Comédie-Française; 2pages in-8 and 2pages small in-4 at his address 43, avenue de St Mandé, XIIe. January 18, 1918. Courteline gives details of the baptismal act of a child born to Mlle de Brie, an actress in Molière's troupe, and bearing the signatures, as godfather and godmother, of Molière and Madeleine Béjart, in Grenoble in August 1652, an act he had seen: "Je l'ai vu, moi, de mes yeux vu", in the cabinet of the Grenoble archivist... [1929]. Courteline asks Fabre to include in the Comédie-Française repertoire La Passion by Edmond Haraucourt (1856-1941), which since 1890 has often been staged [it is actually revived at the Comédie-Française on April 16, 1930, to great critical acclaim]. In conversation with Haraucourt, Courteline had told him "all the admiration this beautiful work inspires in me"; and Haraucourt urged him to tell Fabre, who was reluctant to revive the play. "I know, dear friend, that you have no use for my way of seeing things, and that you're a big enough boy to be able to tell a good piece from a bad one all by yourself. The way you run your big house shows it abundantly; but you can't blame me for inconveniencing your friendship a little, by obliging the friendship of my old and dear Haraucourt. I therefore swear to you that I am making a very special case of La Passion, that all the literary elite think as I do, and that after having passed through the Porte St Martin, the Châtelet, and the Odéon, it must pass in good logic to this Comédie Française, whose welcome is due to it from every point of view".... Fabre's notes in pencil for the reply.
