Sarah BERNHARDT. Autograph note; 1 page in-8 with M numeral. - Lot 51
Sarah BERNHARDT. Autograph note; 1 page in-8 with M numeral. Autograph draft during a performance of Alexandre Dumas fils's La Dame aux camélias. In Act 2, Marguerite Gauthier had to write a reply to a letter she had received: Sarah scribbled a few shapeless lines in pencil, and took the opportunity to point out a draught to the stagehands: "il a quelque chose d'ouvert" ("there's something open"). The paper was retrieved by Blanche Boullenger, an actress in Sarah Bernhardt's troupe, along with the enclosed envelope, which read: "Mademoiselle Marguerite Gauthier. It is not appropriate to play a ridiculous role". Enclosed: - No. 3 of Les Femmes du Jour devoted to Sarah Bernhardt, with color drawings by Coll-Toc, text by Zi-Zim (April 1886, 4p.); - 3 fancy tickets from the Banque du Théâtre Sarah-Bernhardt; - a period photograph of Sarah Bernhardt (as Musset) with Julia Bartet in Musset's La Nuit de Mai (1909); - prospectus for performances by Sarah Bernhardt and her company during her tour of France in October 1909 (ill. by Mucha); - Journal no. of March 27, 1923 on the death of S. Bernhardt; - invitation card to the funeral on March 29, 1923; - sale catalog of the Estate of Mme Sarah Bernhardt, June 11-13, 1923.
