A beautiful old dance mask with a vertical scarification pat - Lot 60
A beautiful old dance mask with a vertical scarification pattern carved in relief on the forehead, characteristic of the Dan people of Côte d'Ivoire, the volumes of the slightly concave sculpted lips and the beautiful erosion of the patina showing the wood veins, add to the pleasure of its presence. It retains its original headdress, made of a bead of dyed traditional cotton weaving and decorated with cowries. A comparable mask from the same corpus, attributed as a deangle dance mask, is reproduced (no. 19, p. 46) in F. Neyt's Trésor de Côte d'Ivoire. Dan, Ivory Coast Late 19th or early 20th century Wood, fabric, cotton, cowrie shells, plant fibers, old erosion and minor damage (wear, woodworm), beautiful old patina. H. 27 cm (24.5 cm without headdress) Provenance : Monsieur V. Collection, Brussels
