Erik SATIE (1866-1925). L.A. and 3 L.A.S., Paris May-June 18 - Lot 121
Erik SATIE (1866-1925). L.A. and 3 L.A.S., Paris May-June 1892, [to Georges Lefebvre]; 1page each 28 x 8 cm (22 x 8 for the last). Curious unpublished letters to a hitherto unknown friend [probably the painter Georges Lefebvre (1862-1912); this name does not appear in the almost complete Correspondance]. Great misery lurks beneath the derision. These short letters are written on strips of laid paper cut from the covers of Sonneries de la Rose+Croix. The first three bear the autograph letterhead: "Oeuvre des Vicieux Européens". May 15. "My old pig. Be good enough to leave your concierge the package requested by Me for the poor drunks of the 35th Arrondissement of London. This parcel must above all contain shoes, a piece of furniture of the first use. So, please deposit these along your concierge where I will come to pick them up tomorrow afternoon. Pour Moi empêché pour cause de décès dans la Gironde: Péladan". May 18. He complains that his "old pig" has caused him to miss the shipment of items for the "poor drunks of the 35th Arrondissement in London. Is this an oversight? Did you not receive my missive? I'm racking my brains over this superb problem and kiss your hands. He comes by the next day: "Especially shoes! May 19. He thanks him for coming "to the Clou [the Auberge du Clou, where Satie played the piano]; it proves a great Heart"... He gives him an appointment "in the person of the package in question"... June 22nd. He asks him to come "this evening to the Clou, I have to talk to you about curious and impossible things [...] I'm asking you on the stomach"... At the bottom of the bill, a press clipping is pasted announcing the names of the candidates for Guiraud's chair at the Académie des Beaux-Arts, including Satie. Attached is a card (torn, one corner missing, in-12) on the letterhead of the Société des Arts Descriptifs (President: E. Ziegelgeselchaftd, Vice-President: Ivan Ternikiew; on the examination committee, the names J.-P. Contamine de Latour, and Erik Satie "compositeur de musique"), signed, dated and completed by Satie for "Monsieur Georges Lefebvre, famous scholar of the XV[cle] century known for his studies on Les peaux de chats et leurs propriétés nat[urelles]", November 6, 1888.
