CHAGALL (Marc) - SORLIER (Charles) - Lot 191
CHAGALL (Marc) - SORLIER (Charles)
Chagall lithographe. 1969-1973. Catalog and notes Charles Sorlier, Fernand Mourlot.
Monte-Carlo : André Sauret, [1974]. - In-4, 318 x 245: frontispiece, 180 pp, (2 ff. first blank). Publisher's printed gray cloth boards, in illustrated dust jacket.
The only fourth volume of the 6 published in the catalog raisonné of the lithographs by Marc CHAGALL (1887-1985), this one covering the period from 1969 to 1973. It is illustrated with two original color lithographs by the artist, printed by Mourlot, including one on the dust jacket and one as a frontispiece.
Precious copy by painter, engraver, sculptor and art historian Maurice ARAMA (b. 1934), bearing a double consignment from Sorlier:
For Maurice Arama. Très cordialement Ch. Sorlier
and from Chagall :
Pour Mr Maurice Arama en souvenir. Marc Chagall
The latter enriched his mailing with a superb original color drawing of a kind of winged horse.
Mr. Arama explained the circumstances under which these items were sent: "I was making lithographs at Mourlot and working with other artists. Fernand Mourlot asked us not to come the next morning, as he had to welcome Marc Chagall at the end of the morning. Passing in front of me, he said, "You can come, but stay in your corner. When Chagall passed me, he introduced me to him as a "Jewish and Moroccan painter". We exchanged a few banalities, and at the end of the visit, Sorlier came back to me with one of his books on Chagall, which he had had signed for me, and on another page, Sorlier expressed his friendship with me. It's an important memory in my life."
Tears to dust jacket.
Provenance: Maurice Arama, with autographs.
