CRINITO (Pietro Riccio)
De Honesta disciplina. Lib. XXV. De Poetis Latinis. Lib. V. Et Poematon. Lib. II.
[Paris]: Vaenundantur ab eodem Ascensio [Josse Bade], [1525]. - In-folio, 335 x 216 : (8 ff.), CIX ff., (1 f.). Brown calf, original boards with blind-stamped decoration, spine ribbed and decorated (modern binding)
Renouard, Bibliographie des impressions et des œuvres de Josse Badius Ascensius, II, pp. 353-354, n° 6.
New edition of the works of Pietro Crinito (1465-1504), a famous 15th-century Italian literary figure, disciple of Politan and friend of Pico della Mirandola and Paolo Giovio. He earned his living as a tutor to the children of the first Florentine families, but died before the age of forty.
This edition brings together his three main works. The first, De Honesta Disciplina, is his most famous work, dealing with education, laws and institutions of the classical era. The second, De Poetis, was the first work to chronicle the lives of ancient Latin poets, from Livius Andronicus to Sidoine Apollinaire, and was first published in 1505. The third text, Poematon, contains his own neo-Latin poetry.
This superbly printed edition was published by Josse Bade, and reproduces those he issued successively from 1508 onwards. His fine mark can be found on the title, surrounded by a wood-engraved historiated decoration of several blocks. The text features numerous handsome lettering with cribbed background.
Copy in modern binding with re-use of the original boards decorated with cold-stamped roulettes.
The decoration on the boards is largely faded. Very good condition inside, with a few old reading marks in the margins. Small marginal wetnesses on the edges of the last leaves.
