JULIETTE DEREL (1918-2007) - Lot 42
JULIETTE DEREL (1918-2007) Covered movement pot; the base has two fins. Polychrome enameled ceramic proof. Signed Juliette DEREL under the base. Circa 2003. Height: 20cm Provenance: Parcours céramique 7th Edition - Vente Azur Enchères du 5 mai 2024 (n° 157). Bibliography and related works: François Lippmann and Marie-Pascale Suhard - Juliette Derel. Céramique - Éditions Snoeck, Ghent, 2023. A large vase from the same series is reproduced on page 44. Juliette Derel, trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Tours, began her career as a ceramist in Vallauris, working at the Atelier du Grand Chêne, the Atelier du Tapis Vert and preparing summer exhibitions at Nérolium. In 1952, she opened her own studio, where she worked alongside her husband Jean Rivier (1915-2017), until they separated in 1957. Initially consisting of bowls and vases, often with abstract, geometric designs, Derel's production expanded over the years to include other utilitarian pieces, notably boldly colored mirrors, furniture and sculptures; her creations were often monochrome - the surfaces scratched or scarified.
