Paris : rue et Hôtel Serpente, 1781-1789 [tomes I à VIII] ; Paris : Moutardier, 1801 [tome IX] ; Paris : Librairie d'éducation, 1800 [tome X]. - 10 volumes (of 12) in-4, 255 x 190. Mottled calf (volumes I to VIII) and mottled basane (volumes IX and X), gilt border, spine ribbed and decorated, speckled edges (period bindings). Partly first edition of this important work published and largely written by the learned botanist, agronomist and churchman François Rozier (1734-1793), constituting the most complete picture of French agriculture at the end of the 18th century. The first 8 volumes as well as the 10th are first editions, the 9th is a reprint of 1801, the original having been published in 1796. The last 2 volumes, published in 1805, are missing. Contributors included the famous agronomist Antoine-Augustin Parmentier, as well as Chaptal, Antoine Alexis François Cadet de Vaux, Jean-Baptiste Rougier de La Bergerie and others. At the head of the 10th volume is a "Notice Sur la Vie et les Écrits de l'Abbé Rozier" by publisher and author Antoine Jeudy Dugour (1765-1849), whose autograph signature appears at the bottom of the first page. The set includes 6 folding tables and 244 plates, including Rozier's portrait at the head of the tenth volume. Each title also features a fine copper-engraved vignette. The first 8 volumes, in calf, are uniformly bound, while the last two, bound in basane, feature a slightly different decoration. Epidermal damage, missing headpieces, dull corners, a few marginal tears, scattered wetness and foxing. Provenance: Chabannes, with armorial bookplate (flying) of a family member, with the motto "Non palma sine pulvere".
