LIGER (Louis). - Lot 83
LIGER (Louis).
La Nouvelle Maison Rustique, ou Économie Générale de tous les biens de campagne ; la manière de les entretenir & de les multiplier...
Paris : Veuve Savoye, 1775. - 2 volumes in-4, frontispiece, (2 ff.), iv, (2 ff.), 916 pp. 14 plates; (4 ff.), 918 pp. (1 f.), 23 plates. Marbled calf, ornate ribbed spine, red edges (period binding).
"New edition of this classic work on agriculture and rural economy, written by agronomist Louis Liger and first published in 1700. The author drew material for his book from "La Maison rustique" by Charles Estienne and Jean Lébault.
Divided into four parts, the work touches on all areas of rural life: "L'intérieur et la Basse-Cour de la Maison Rustique (Bâtiments, volaille, bêtes de somme, "mouches à miel", etc.). - Les Terres aux Champs (vineyards, hedges, straight country paths, etc.). - Gardening, Vines & Drinks. - Ponds, Fishing, Hunting, & Other Country Amusements; Cooking and Office."
The edition is illustrated with a frontispiece and 37 copper-engraved plates, including two fold-outs, as well as nearly 40 woodcuts in the text.
A good copy, despite very rare foxing and some spotting and rubbing to the binding.
Provenance: heraldic bookplate engraved by Agry, bearing the Latin motto "non palma sine pulvere". This motto is linked to the Chabannes family, but the arms do not appear to be linked to it."
