CUREUS (Joachimus) Schlesische General Chronica : Darinnen W - Lot 47
CUREUS (Joachimus) Schlesische General Chronica : Darinnen Warhaffte eigentliche vnd kurtze Beschreibung, Des Landes Ober vnd Nider Schlesien... Wittenberg, 1585 ; Leipzig : Berwaldt, 1585. -3 parts in one volume in-4, 194 x 149: (4 ff.), 424 pp, pp. 427-465 pp. misquoted 466 (mq pp. 425-426), (6 ff.); 195 pp, (4 ff. last blank), 1 table; (52 ff.). Cold-stamped sow's skin on bevelled wood, framed with foliage and medallion fillets and scrolls on the boards, first plate decorated in the center with a plaque depicting the baptism of Christ, spine ribbed, leather and brass clasps (contemporary German binding). Rare first German edition of one of the first and most important works on the history of Silesia from its origins to the 16th century, by the German theologian and physician Joachimus Cureus (1532-1573). Originally composed in Latin, it was translated into German by Heinrich Rätel and published by Laurent Müller. The edition is divided into three parts, the first two being translations of Cureus' text, and the third containing Polish, Livonian, Muscovite and Swedish stories collected by Müller. An in-folio edition was published at the same time in Frankfurt by Feyerabend. The second part includes a fold-out genealogical table outside the text. A choice copy, in its original condition in cold-stamped saddle-skin, complete with its original clasps. Some soiling and staining to the binding, a small loss to one jaw. Leaves heavily browned, as in all copies consulted. Missing leaf Dd5 in the first part, corresponding to pages 425-426.
