"Set of two works on two famous cases of morality tried in Toulouse.
The first is a report and commentary on the Martin Guerre case, a peasant from Artigat, a judicial case of identity theft. Following on from the 1561 edition, this is a new edition of the text by Jean de Coras (1515-1572), the magistrate who heard the case. The latter "conceived his work as a 'tragi-comedy', in which he involved himself, since he was an essential actor in his role as rapporteur" (p. 505).
The second work, in its original edition, tells the story of Burdeus, Gairaud, Candolas and Esbaldit, and their common mistress Violante de Barts, an extraordinary love story with some of the most romantic characters and situations.
According to Jacques Poumarède: "Guillaume de Ségla's work, like that of Jean de Coras, is a truly exceptional document [...] without equal for its time, because it comes from two magistrates who were directly involved in the criminal cases they relate. Their works offer us a kind of plunge into the conscience of the judge" (Poumarède, "De l''Arrêt mémorable' de Coras (1561) à l''Histoire tragique' (1613) de Séglas, l'invention de la chronique criminelle, in: "Annales du Midi", 2008, p. 510).
