Auguste Nicolas CAIN (1821-1894) - Lot 32
Auguste Nicolas CAIN (1821-1894) Pair of six-light metal candelabras, decorated with oak leaves, acorns and hunting trophies, standing on three claw feet, topped with a pair of birds (Accident, missing parts). H.: approx. 60cm Presented by the artist to Emma Calvé (whose brother Henri was her lover). A renowned animal sculptor, author of the famous groups adorning the Jardin des Plantes, Auguste Nicolas Cain belonged to the artistic and social circle that Emma Calvé frequented in the 1890s. The singer shared her life with Henri Cain, librettist, man of letters and collaborator of Massenet, whose librettos he wrote for La Navarraise and Sapho, both created by Emma. According to tradition, this pair of candelabras was given by Auguste Cain to the singer as a token of admiration - or complicit friendship - for the couple she formed with her brother.
