Important service set (89 pieces) in white and gold Sarregue - Lot 30
Important service set (89 pieces) in white and gold Sarreguemines porcelain, including: 34 large plates, 17 soup plates, 25 dessert plates, 5 serving pieces (shaped dishes, bowls, etc.), 3 compotiers on pedestals, 1 sauceboat with adjoining tray, 1 covered soup tureen. Marked with Emma Calvé's motto "Qui chante son mal enchante" and a cicada. (Worn gilding, a few chips). ACCIDENTS Some pieces of this service are unmarked. This refined service was designed especially for Emma Calvé. Each piece bears her monogram and an Occitan motto translated into French, which for the singer became a veritable profession of artistic faith: "Qui chante son mal enchante" ("Who sings his evil enchants"). Derived from Provençal folk wisdom and adopted by félibres such as Frédéric Mistral, this maxim sums up Emma Calvé's path: sing to soothe, embody to transcend. She made it her personal motto, engraved on her porcelain as she wrote it in her memoirs - a faithful reflection of her conception of song as remedy and offering. The cicada that accompanies this motto is more than a decorative motif: it says everything about Emma Calvé. A southern symbol par excellence and the muse of Provençal fairy tales, it embodies song, sunshine... and reckless spending. Like the singer, who lived in the glitter of the stage and ended her life without a fortune, the cicada sings, gives everything - and plans nothing. An emblem as lyrical as it is lucid, chosen no doubt with a certain sense of self-mockery. Having a dinner service made to her initials, adorned with a personal emblem, reflects the importance Emma Calvé attached to the aesthetics of everyday life, extending art into everyday objects, between intimate remembrance and public manifestation of her legend.
