Provenance :
Collection of the Marquis de Vaulchier du Deschaux, then by descent.
Early in his career, Lyon silversmith Thomas-Joseph ARMAND-CAILLAT worked for the Fourvière basilica and the Lyon diocese in a neo-Gothic style that was very much in vogue at the time. He exhibited at the Paris World Fairs in 1867 and 1878, developing a more symbolist style. This reliquary bust was commissioned by Louis de Vaulchier, Marquis du Deschaux, a literary journalist and editor of the Union franc-comtoise. An ultramontane and legitimist Catholic, he acquired this reliquary to the glory of Saint Louis from the famous goldsmith.
