Attributed to Lucas van UDEN (Antwerp 1595 - 1672) - Lot 10
Attributed to Lucas van UDEN (Antwerp 1595 - 1672) Landscape recto-verso, presumed view of the convent of the Capuchin Friars Minor in Tervuren Pen and black ink, watercolor. Annotated on verso in black pencil "Monastère de Tervuren". (Slightly oiled, hole at lower right, small stains, vertical fold, small edge chips). 15.2 x 30.8 cm (irregular edges) Provenance : Sotheby's sale, London, December 14, 1992, lot no. 90, reproduced. The Convent of the Capuchins was a Catholic convent located in the Forêt de Soignes, in what is now the Bois des Capucins, in Tervuren. It was founded in 1626 on the initiative of Archduchess Isabelle and destroyed in 1791. Lucas van der Uden produced several drawings of the Forêt de Soignes (one in the Morgan Library, New York, and an engraving in the National Gallery of Denmark, Copenhagen). Our drawing is similar to the engravings by A. Sanderus. Sanderus, known for his masterpiece, Un Historique des abbayes et monastères brabançons (Chorographia sacra Brabantiae sive celebrium in ea provincia ecclesiarum et coenobiorum descriptio, imaginibus aeneis illustrata, Brussels, 1659, 2nd ed., The Hague, 1726). Another panoramic view of the convent at Tervuren, taken from a different angle.
