Ossip ZADKINE (1888-1967) - FORMER WILHELM LOTH COLLECTION (1920-1993) SCULPTOR IN DARMSTADT (GERMANY) Kneeling woman, circa 1920 Original terracotta. Unsigned. 51.5 x 19.5 x 15.5 cm (An accident to the reattached chin, cracks to the elbow and along the right arm). Important: The Musée Zadkine, in an e-mail sent on November 4, 2024 to the sculpture's current owner and written by Véronique Gautherin, the institution's deputy director, has confirmed the authenticity of this work after a lengthy investigation. Provenance and history : - Wilhelm Loth (1920-1993), Darmstadt. The German sculptor received this work from Ossip Zadkine as a token of his appreciation for the organization in 1953 of the first retrospective in Germany of his work within the framework of the New Secession in Darmstadt. Zadkine had personally visited Darmstadt for the opening of this event. A letter from Zadkine, contained in the abundant correspondence of the Wilhelm Loth estate, testifies to this gift. In 1982, Loth mentioned the gift in letters to Christa Lichtenstern, following the publication of her monograph on Zadkine in 1980. On November 17, 1982, Wilhelm Loth sent Christa Lichtenstern three slides entitled "My Zadkine". These letters and the slides, carefully preserved by Christa Lichtenstern, enabled the work to be definitively authenticated by the Musée Zadkine - Musée de la Ville de Paris, holder of the artist's moral rights. - Private collection, Berlin. Acquired in 1993 by the current owner from the widow of Wilhelm Loth. Bibliography Christa Lichtenstern, - Unsere Schönheit heute heißt Intensität - Wilhelm Loths frühe Begegnungen mit Moore, Picasso und Ossip Zadkine - Exhibition catalog Wilhelm Loth zu Ehren, Retrospektive - Plastiken, Gemälde, Zeichnungen, Darmstadt-Mathildenhöhe, 1995.
