Traditional holiday shirt, home-made, Alsace, 19th century. - Lot 252
Traditional holiday shirt, home-made, Alsace, 19th century. Bodice in fine linen, hemp from the waist up, flap slit in front, lace cuffs, embroidered armholes with embossed days, cartouche on chest cross-stitched in red with the initials "KA. HA". As early as the 17th century, the peasant woman wore a very long shirt, adorned at the neck by a fairly narrow burr, replaced by a slight neckline or buttoning. By the 1830s, sleeves were long and puffed, then rolled up below the elbow. They were tied with a ribbon sewn at the ends.
