Georges BERNANOS. Autograph manuscript, [1946]; 5 1/4 pages in-4 on school paper, numerous erasures and corrections. An autograph note signed by Albert Béguin, dated April 1949, attached to the Bernanos manuscript, gives further details: "Drafts of a 1946 article about a word by R.P. Riquet on the union of the French. Successive drafts of the same text, first work, provisional and then final editing"... "The theme of Union is an easy one, allowing for all manner of complacency. In the moral, social and political anarchy to which we have fallen, true union, the union that saves, cannot be achieved without constraint, because it would be too costly. Rather than raise the walls of the ruined city at the risk of living and working more or less long in a house without a roof, the policy is to camp on the rubble, burning what furniture remains to keep warm"...
