BLOY (Léon).
The Symbolism of Appearance. 1879-1880.
Paris: Librairie Lemercier, 1925. -In-16, paperback, burgundy half-percaline folder.
Posthumous first edition, published by the author's wife, Jeanne Léon-Bloy. It is illustrated with a woodcut portrait of the writer and a reproduction of his tomb in Bourg-la-Reine.
"Remained in manuscript on his desk all his life, where it served as his desk blotter, this work, left unfinished by Bloy but which he no doubt planned to include in his book "Celle qui pleure", was born in 1879 during a pilgrimage to the mountain of La Salette in the company of Abbé Tardif de Moidrey, Léon Bloy's confessor, who was at the origin of his vocation and who died a few weeks later; Bloy reprinted several parts of it in various works, especially after 1906, when he returned to the theme of La Salette" (Pierre Berès).
ONE OF THE FIRST 10 NUMBERED COPIES ON IMPERIAL JAPAN PAPER.
