Théodore CHASSÉRIAU (Saint-Domingue 1819 - Paris 1856) - Lot 45
Théodore CHASSÉRIAU (Saint-Domingue 1819 - Paris 1856)
Two figure studies
Black pencil and white chalk highlights on half-tone paper.
(Small folds and stains).
31x27.5cm
The figure on the left of our drawing can be compared to the painting entitled La Paix protectrice des Arts et travaux de la Terre, in which the central figure is very close to our sketch. Two other preparatory drawings for the same figure are in the Louvre (see: L. A . Prat, L'Inventaire général des dessins de Théodore Chasseriau, Musée du Louvre, Paris, 1988, no. 487-488, reproduced p. 233).
The other study is a first thought, not retained, for the woman seated at the center of the Tepidarium, preserved at the Musée d'Orsay, L.A. Prat, opus quoted above, no. 652v, p. 297, reproduced).
