Thangka representing Vajrayogini, Tibet, 19th century
Tempera on canvas. The deity is shown standing in red, with a single face and two hands, holding a curved katrika knife in his right hand and a raised kapala skull cup in his left. A khatvanga staff rests on her left shoulder. Adorned with a diadem of skulls and gold ornaments, jewels and bones, she wears a necklace of fifty dry skulls. She stands with both feet on the bodies of Kalaratri, red, and Bhairava, black, above a sun disk and a base of multicolored lotus petals. Completely surrounded by a mandorla of the flames of pure consciousness, she looks up into the pure realm of Khechara and drinks from the cup in her left hand. She is surrounded at the two upper corners by two lamas and at the lower corners by Mo lha on her left and Dharmapala Yonten Gyalpo on her right. It is adorned with an embroidered silk frame in various colors: gold, red and blue, the bottom embroidered with two phoenix heads, peonies, dormice in grapes, lotus and fish.
