Bell Telephone Laboratories Shot during a screening of Herbert Eugene Ives' animated relief images, c. 1933. Vintage silver print. Image: 17.8 x 18.8 cm / Sheet: 21.5 x 28 cm Bibliography: "Motion Pictures In Relief" in Bell Laboratories Record, June 1932, vol. 10, n°10, pp. 367-369. The genealogy of inventions is complex and sometimes cruel. Before taking a seat in front of a three-dimensional film or starting a videoconference, who thinks of the decisive steps that brought such technologies to fruition? Employed by Bell Telephone Laboratories in the 1930s, Herbert Eugene Ives proposed a number of innovations for the teletransmission of animated and 3D images. The photograph of a projection organized in 1933 suggests that the process relies on differentiated viewing between the right and left eyes. Above all, it shows that scientific concerns, while pursuing other objectives, can formally approach the artistic research of the avant-garde.
