DREYFUS affair. 4 L.A.S., 1899-1906. - Lot 533
DREYFUS affair. 4 L.A.S., 1899-1906. Henri ROCHEFORT (1831-1913). September 23, 1899, to journalist Henri Galli (2pages in-8, one line cut at bottom of first page). After the Rennes trial, which Rochefort had followed from Aix-les-Bains: "I believed in the acquittal and was sick of it. That's why I jumped for joy when I read the judgment [...] It must be said that public opinion is very much on our side; never has the Intransigeant sold as much as it does now. Now the Dreyfusard rags are starting to insult Galliffet. It's going to be great fun. [...] We've won, that's the main thing, but I beg you to believe that I sweated it out right up to the last moment"... Mathieu DREYFUS (1852-1930). Paris December 7, 1899, to M. Lyret (1p. in-8), addressing Esterhazy's letter (below). Ferdinand ESTERHAZY (1847-1923). September 6, to a friend (1p. in-8), about money and stock market matters. Edgar DEMANGE (1841-1925, Dreyfus lawyer). Paris July 13, 1906, to a friend (3p. in-8). The day after the Court of Cassation annulled the September 1899 judgment. "For the past month that I have been living solely for and at the Cour de Cassation, I have lost sight of 'politics' and my 'interests'". Politics will take a rest, and his interests "that is to say, my cigars" are in jeopardy" if his friend doesn't buy him four boxes. In a postscript, he adds: "What do you say to the stop?"
