GUÈZE, Visite des places fortes de la frontière Sud-Est, Carnet-Journal, July-August 3, 1881; 112-page pencil notebook with 10 color sketches (plans) and 4 prints and maps, brown cloth cover. Sur les places-fortes et fortifications. Notebook written by E. Guèze, "Capitaine au 7e régiment d'Infanterie, École supérieure de guerre, 1ère Division". The notebook begins with a few general considerations: "The South-East frontier can be divided into 3 theaters of operations formed by the three basins of the Durance and the Mediterranean [...] We shall visit these three theaters of operations in turn, and study more specifically the defense system adapted in the first two"... He studies in particular the strongholds of Toulon (28 p., plan and map drawn), Fort Saint-Laurent, Mont Dauphin, Fort de Tournoux, Place de Briançon (14 pages, sketches and maps), Place de Grenoble (10 p. with sketches, plans and maps), Albertville (18 p. with sketches, plans and maps), Fort de Joux, Place de Besançon (18 p. with sketches, plans and maps). Signed and dated at the end "Besançon le 3 août 1881"...
