Jean LORRAIN (1855-1906). 3 L.A.S., 1885 and s.d., to his publisher E. Giraud; 6pages in-8, one with the motto Divina belluis.
Correspondence with his publisher.
July 29. Sends the last proofs sent by M. Décembre directly to Giraud: "Everything is intertexted, the titles changed, even the order of the short stories, and the whole more studded with errors than at the last correction in June, for I had the whole book composed in my hands. I don't know what kind of man this December is [...], if you don't extract from this imbecile or this scoundrel the large sum, to which we are both entitled, it is we who are the imbeciles. See and act, I want nothing more to do with this scoundrel"... Hennequin promised to talk about Viviane... Fécamp July 31. New complaints against Décembre "who not only changes titles and inverts the order of paragraphs, but also misplaces manuscripts [...] there is no recourse against such a man"... A dozen Modernités are to be sent to the Quittard ladies in Étretat, where yesterday he found none of his volumes and where sales are better than in Fécamp, asking if they still have Forêt Bleue and Sang des Dieux...
Having to correct Les Lepillier, and his father being ill, he won't be back in time for the sale on the 20th, but he instructs Giraud to do "the service with the author's homage and my name signed for me, to the bibliographers, but let me do the service myself for Figaro, Gaulois, Gil-Blas, Événement, Voltaire, Liberté, Siècle and that of the Revues as well; nothing to the confrères either, I reserve the right to choose my world". You have to put in deposits everywhere, especially with Marpon and Librairie Nouvelle, "that's the big outlet [...] Above all, don't send anything to colleagues, there are quite a few I'm eliminating, the hostile and useless ones, Maupassant, Mendès, Maizeroy"...
