Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (1864-1901) In forty. 1893. Lithograph. 235 x 285 [280 x 380]. Delteil 42; Wittrock 32. Printed in olive green. A very fine, fresh proof on cream glazed vellum, numbered in pencil (N° 90) and stamped with the red monogram. Full margins. Edition of 90 proofs (more than half stamped), plus 10 japon proofs. Subject published by L'Escarmouche and reproduced in the November 26, 1893 issue. The title En quarante comes from the prostitution slang of the time, "(se) mettre en quarante" meaning "(se) prostituer". Here, the prostitute is seated at a table with her client.
