Jean-Pierre GUIGNON (1702-1774). Six Sonates à violon seul e - Lot 91
Jean-Pierre GUIGNON (1702-1774). Six Sonates à violon seul et basse. Dedicated to Monsieur Bonnier de la Mosson, Treasurer General of the States of Languedoc. By J.P. Guignon Roy des Violons. iuvre VIe. Gravées par Melle Bertin (Paris, chez Madame Boivin et le Sieur Le Clerc, [1743]); in-fol., [2 ff.]-35 p., contemporary marbled paper boards (spine worn). Rare first edition of this second collection of Sonatas for violin and continuo by Guignon (RISM A/I G 5048). Some light dampening. Giovanni Pietro Ghignone, a native of Turin, entered the Chapelle Royale in 1733, and Frenchified his name; naturalized in 1741, he was one of Vivaldi's principal introducers in France; a disciple of Somis, his talents earned him the nickname Roy des violonistes . This opus is dedicated to the financier and patron Joseph Bonnier de la Mosson (1702-1744), with a laudatory dedication engraved at the head of the collection: Two things equally guided me in the conduct of the work I present to you, Imagination to compose it; Judgment, to offer it to you; and I make it a marked honor to publish that I did not feel myself more driven by the desire to make Beauty, than by the flattering idea of being aplauded by a Connoisseur such as yourself ... Provenance: collection of violinist Henri Vieuxtemps.
