Porcelain dish enameled in blue underglaze on a yellow groun - Lot 36
Porcelain dish enameled in blue underglaze on a yellow ground with flowers in the Ming style, China, 18th century, Yongzheng mark and period (1723-1735)
Of circular form, decorated in a central medallion and on the rim with Ming-style scrolls of lotus flowers and peonies. A stylized frieze enameled in blue underglaze on a green background decorates the rim of the dish. The same floral design is repeated on the back of the marli, between two friezes of scrolls and grecias on a green background. The underside is enameled yellow and bears the Yongzheng six-character kaishu mark within an underglaze blue-enameled double circle.
Diameter: 27 cm
Broken and restored (old staples).
Only one example related to the present dish with floral decoration and a Yongzheng reign mark on a yellow (not white) ground appears to be known; formerly in the collection of Edward T. Chow (1910-1980) and sold at Sotheby's in Hong Kong on May 19, 1981, lot 584. The enamelled friezes on a pale green background around the inner and outer edges of the dish are an artistic innovation of the Yongzheng period.
