[ROMAN LAW]. Corpus iuris civilis Iustinianei / cum commentariis Acursii, Scholiis Contii et Dionysii Gothofredi... Lyon: heirs of Guillaume Rouillé, 1618-1627. - 6 large folio volumes, brown calf, ornate ribbed spine, speckled edges (period binding). Fine Lyon edition of the corpus of civil law, i.e. the collection of Roman law texts collected or written during the reign of Emperor Justinian (0482-0565). Reissued many times, the present edition is accompanied by commentaries and notes by Jacques Cujas (1522-1590), Antoine Le Conte (1526?-1586), Denys Godefroy (1549-1622), Pierre de Brosses and Esteban Daoiz (1550?-1619). The first three volumes respectively include the "Digest" or "Pandectes", a collection of extracts from the works of jurisconsults from the centuries before Justinian. The fourth volume is devoted to the "Justinian Code", a collection of imperial constitutions from Hadrian to Justinian, beginning with a biography of the latter. Volume 5 contains the end of the Code, and several texts and commentaries, including the "Novelles", a collection of imperial constitutions issued after the Code, the "Libri feudorum", a compilation of Lombard law, the "Constitutiones Friderici secundi" and the "Institutes", a kind of law manual. The final volume contains the important indexes compiled by Esteban Daoiz. A fine copy in contemporary binding. Some wear and tear, several corners dulled. Some light foxing and spotting, but not severe, except in volume 4, which contains heavy foxing inside and on the bottom of the second plate. Some worm damage.
