On the repression of the Rouen riots in 1849 and the dismissal of the anti-slavery Abbé Dugoujon from Guadeloupe.
January 26. "Yesterday, in my letter to M. de Falloux, I spoke of the uprightness and energy shown by Mr. Blanche in the trial of the Rouen insurgents, where he took on the defense of one of the defendants, Mr. Dubreuil, against whom the charge was dropped. He mentions Douche, battalion commander of the Rouen National Guard, "to whose energy the City of Rouen owes above all the preservation of the Hôtel de Ville during the disastrous days of last April"... - January 28, concerning relief for Abbé Fleury, canon of Coutances Cathedral", and the less than reassuring news from Paris: "There is talk of numerous gatherings and plans for riots in connection with the law on clubs. God forbid that these anarchist plans should fail! If the struggle begins, may the vigor of the republic be measured against the harm these disrupters of public peace are doing to France! - March 25, on the serious events in the West Indies: "they must unfortunately lead M. le ministre des cultes to provide for the replacement of Abbé de Goujeon [Dugoujon] as Vicar Apostolic"; he recommends Abbé Guyard as his successor. He intervenes on behalf of the architect Verrolles, who was supervising the restoration of Bayeux Cathedral... - June 20, concerning the reconstruction of the church at Villers-Bocage. Etc.
