Anthelme BRILLAT-SAVARIN (1755-1826) magistrate and gastrono - Lot 160
Anthelme BRILLAT-SAVARIN (1755-1826) magistrate and gastronome. L.A.S. "BS", Paris February 3 [1816?], to his niece Élisabeth Brillat des Terreaux, Belley (Ain); 3 pages in-8, addressed (small tear from broken seal, old mounting on blue paper).
He was delighted to receive news of her from Lyon, "because when you have bitches and nieces on the road, you can't worry too much about such lucky merchandise"... He recounts an adventure involving his dog Ida: "The other day, as I was passing in the rue de Melle Templier, I caught a cabriolet driver who had grabbed Ida and was carrying her in his car. I took his number and wrote to the Prefect of Police, who in turn had him grabbed and put in prison, where he remains to this day. His wife came to my knees, and after scolding her, I agreed that no further action should be taken"... He speaks humorously of his brother Scipion, who "is learning to play the hock vigorously" at Mme de Villeplaine's ball, and who brought him something so kind from Agathe, that he didn't sleep for three nights. He gives news of some friends: the general who doesn't want to die a boy, MM. Revenaz, Vergèz, Roux Vital, etc. "Lord Wellington told the Minister of Finance that he considered it certain that the coming year would be much more advantageous to France than the one that has just passed, and it is believed that the foreigners will leave. I think that New Year's Day will have brought you together, so I send you my blessing and my best wishes"...
