LOUIS-PHILIPPE (1773-1850). L.A.S. "Louis Philippe d'Orléans - Lot 130
LOUIS-PHILIPPE (1773-1850). L.A.S. "Louis Philippe d'Orléans", Twickenham, March 16, 1816, to his uncle LOUIS XVIII; 3 pages in-fol. (cracks in folds). The birth of his fifth child being imminent, he wondered about the formalities necessary in England, and asked the King to give him the title of "Mademoiselle de Montpensier" if it is a girl; "if it is a son, he should perhaps also bear the title of Duke of Montpensier, but I confess to Your Majesty that the cruel loss I have made of a dear brother who bore it would make me prefer, if I were to have a third son, that he bear the title of Prince of Joinville. [Françoise-Louise-Caroline d'Orléans, Mademoiselle de Montpensier, born on March 28, 1816 at Twickenham, died on May 21, 1818]. Attached are 2 documents concerning the regicide Marius DARMÈS (1797-1841; author of a failed attempt on Louis-Philippe's life on October 15, 1840; sentenced to death): - L.A. (minute): he is the only guilty one, but is nevertheless surprised that his "witnesses were not heard [...] I am sure that all his witnesses heard would restore my reputation that one wanted to wither, I know that one will not believe such infamies. The truth is like the Sun, it can be seen through all the obstacles, they wanted to give posterity the picture of a paricide.[...] I alone have premeditated and executed the act of October 15, I saw behind me the cliques, the caste, the ambitions, ready to march [...] I wanted a material Revolution from which it would have been possible to come out a million of men who would have covered the container, toppled the Lion of Vaterloo, planted the national flag on the banks of the Rhine", etc... - P.S. by the Prosecutor of the King Franck-Carré, giving order to the carpenter to draw up "for Monday May 31, 1841 at seven o'clock in the morning at the roundabout of the Barrière St Jacques the scaffold necessary for the execution of the decision of the Court of Paris of May 29, 1841 which condemns the named Darmès (Emmanuel Marius) to the sentence of death for attempt against the life of the King".
