KARQUEL (Gaston). - Lot 216
KARQUEL (Gaston). Photographic alphabet. Composition and photographs of Gaston Karquel. Text by Pauline David. Les Éditions du Compas. 33, rue Jacob, Paris (6e). [Circa 1950]. (21,3 x 21,3 cm). (26) free leaves with a black and white photograph on the front and a text in white, on a background of different colors, on the back, (1) leaf, printed in black: cardboard box opening like a book, typographical compositions of colored letters with a child's face in black and white, in the center of the first plate, publisher in the center of the second. Rare photographic alphabet book imagined by one of the greatest photographers of the twentieth century, Gaston Karquel (1906-1971). A photograph by letter of the alphabet with the initial in relief placed in the lower right, on the reverse, the name of the occurrence photographed, in two typographic forms, and a sentence containing this name. The sentences put end to end form an endless story (the Z continuing in A, etc.). A last sheet "for those who love photography", contains all the titles of the pictures, indicating the place of the shooting, the speed of the snapshot, the aperture of the diaphragm, the screen and the emulsion. Three copies are referenced in the libraries, Openbare bibliotheek Amsterdam, Princeton University Library and Fonds patrimonial Heure Joyeuse, none of which has the last leaf. A handwritten note on the reverse of the first cover by a young Muner in the 11th grade in Barcelona in 1949-50, teacher Paulette Corné, dates this exceptional work. In perfect condition, with just a minor rubbing at the foot of the spine.
